A Course in Miracles
A Course in Miracles is a three-volume curriculum consisting
of a Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. There
are currently over one and a half million copies of the Course
in circulation worldwide. Translations in Chinese, Danish, Dutch,
German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish are
also available, with eleven other translations now in progress.
A Course in Miracles focuses on the healing of relationships.
A Course in Miracles also emphasizes that it is but one version
of the universal curriculum. A Course in Miracles is that of traditional
Christianity, it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational
spirituality. A Course in Miracles therefore is a universal spiritual
teaching, not a religion. The "Text" of the A Course
in Miracles presents the theory that has been built into its study
the development of the experience of forgiveness that is the Course's
goal for the student. In this regard,
Course in Miracles "Workbook for Students" consists
of 365 lessons, an exercise for each day of the year. The "Manual
for Teachers" is written in question-and-answer form and
provides answers to some of the more likely questions a student
might ask.
A Course in Miracles was "scribed" by Dr. Helen Schucman
between 1965 and 1972 through a process of inner dictation. She
experienced the process as one of a distinct and clear dictation
from an inner voice, which earlier had identified itself to her
as Jesus. Helen Schucman, Ph.D., was a clinical and research psychologist,
who held the tenured position of Associate Professor of Medical
Psychology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at the Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Center in New York City.
William Thetford, Ph.D., was a tenured Professor of Medical Psychology
at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and
Director of the Psychology Department at the Presbyterian Hospital
in New York City for whom Dr. Schucman worked. As her trusted
friend and colleague also, Dr. Thetford assisted and supported
Dr. Schucman throughout the Course's scribing, including the events
that led up to it.
The actual process of the scribing was not difficult, and for
the most part flowed rather smoothly. Helen would write down Jesus'
words in shorthand notebooks, and whenever she and Bill had time
during a very busy schedule, she would dictate to Bill what had
been dictated to her. Bill would then type it directly from Helen's
dictation, acting as transcriber. It was truly a collaborative
venture between them. It also ensured that the Course-the answer
to their question to find "another way"-would be absolutely
faithful to the words and message Helen received from Jesus. The
process took seven years, and was completed in October, 1972.

Organizations. This has been our founders Hu Dalconzo's dream
ever since he was an inner city schoolteacher almost 30-years
ago. Just imagine a network of K-12 schools where besides reading,
writing and arithmetic, our curriculum will integrate Self-mastery
skills such as Self-parenting so that our students can learn how
to get their Emotional Dependency Needs met. Emotional dependency
needs are the intimacy, nurturing, and unconditional love that
a child "needs" in order to feel safe, sane, and secure so that
he/she can grow up to be an emotionally mature, highly functional
adult. Our Self-mastery schools will use HLC's clinically proven
teaching methods, which takes complex self-help subjects such
as Self-parenting from an abstract, hard to understand theoretical
concept and breaks it down piece by piece into a step by step,
easy to understand, specific set of emotionally Self-nurturing
exercises to make it easy for our K-12 teachers to instruct. Our
K-12 teachers will instruct our joint venture students on how
to master the pieces of Self-mastery, one at a time, until they
have fulfilled all of their emotional dependency needs, while
they are receiving a standardized K-12 education.
